I first poked my head into Polyester
looking for directions. I stayed for its wares. I'd just arrived in Melbourne,
and was pleased to find one of the local 'fringe' bookstores.
I became a frequent customer, first buying local comics by the likes of
Q-Ray and Athonk,
then leaving my own on consignment. There aren't too many stores
that carry small press zines and comics, and this one is a bastion of the
local self-publishing community. If it weren't for Polyester, I wouldn't
have met half the people I know down under.
I've since left Oz, but keep in touch and was recently surprised to learn
that Polyester has been raided. Around Christmas, eight officers
from the Office of Film and Literature Classification showed up with a
warrant, and carted away boxes of material. Charges haven't been
laid yet, and a defense fund is in the works.
